Educating Girlhood

In movies, tv shows and the media, university life for young women is often glamourised to an unrealistic standard. As I am soon going to university myself, I decided to look into the lives of young British female university students to get a real idea as to what their lives are really like. I did not want to look upon the way these women live with the intent of showing something that is not true, I decided to document them through a girl gaze; in a way which they want to be represented. Something which ought to be readily available to everyone despite their class or their background, university education is fast becoming a privilege among those fortunate enough to be able to afford it due to the continuous rise of tuition fees inflicted by our Conservative government. Unfortunately because of the rise in fees, these women photographed may potentially be one of the last generations of women to attend university. Because of this, I took this project as an opportunity to show real female university students and what we could miss out on in future as long as tuition fees continue to rise.
